GT identification is easiest when you compare several features together instead of relying on one color.
Giant Trevally
Typical features:
β’ deep, heavy body
β’ steep forehead
β’ thick head and shoulders
β’ strong forked tail
β’ silver-grey to darker adult coloration
β’ strong scutes toward the tail
Bluefin Trevally
Bluefin trevally are generally more colorful, with bright blue fins and blue spotting. They often look more streamlined than a large adult GT.
Bigeye Trevally
Bigeye trevally are named for their proportionally large eyes and usually have a slimmer profile.
Why juveniles are harder
Young trevallies may not show the exaggerated adult body shape or colors anglers expect. Lighting, stress and water color can also change appearance.
Identification checklist
Compare:
1. head profile
2. body depth
3. eye proportion
4. fin color
5. spotting
6. lateral-line scutes
7. overall body proportions
Do not identify by color alone
Dark GT and bright GT can be the same species under different conditions. Shape and structural features are more reliable.
