How to Find Giant Trevally: Reef, Current, Tide & Structure

Finding GT is a water-reading problem. The highest-value clues are current, structure and bait.

The three-part model

**Current** moves food.

**Structure** creates ambush points.

**Bait** confirms that the food chain is active.

When all three overlap, fish that water carefully.

Reef edges

A reef edge creates a boundary between shallow cover and deeper escape water. Cast along the edge, across current and through pressure points rather than only straight away from you.

Rocky points

Points accelerate flow. The up-current face, side seam and down-current eddy can all hold fish depending on tide direction.

White water

Breaking waves disturb bait and create visual cover. GT often use these chaotic zones, but shore anglers must balance opportunity with safety.

Channels and passes

Narrow moving-water lanes can funnel bait. Fish the mouth, current seam and any depth change within the channel.

Bird and bait activity

Birds do not guarantee GT, but active birds, fleeing bait and sudden explosions are valuable real-time evidence. Spend more time on active water than on attractive but empty scenery.

Tide

Do not assume one tide stage is universally best. Learn how the local structure behaves as the water moves. A reef pass that is excellent on one direction may be almost dead on the reverse.

A practical search pattern

1. identify structure

2. watch water movement

3. look for bait

4. cast from multiple angles

5. move if the zone shows no life

6. return later when tide changes

Electronics

From a boat, sonar can reveal bait depth, drop-offs and fish near structure. Electronics do not replace visual clues; they add another layer.

Final principle

Do not ask, “Where do GT live?” only. Ask, “Where will a GT have an advantage over its prey right now?”
