Many GT losses happen before the fish is hooked. Small preparation and positioning errors become serious when a powerful fish reaches reef or rock.
1. Fishing empty water too long
Beautiful water is not always active water. Look for current and bait.
2. Using weak terminal tackle
A split ring or hook is part of the system. Upgrade components appropriately.
3. Ignoring leader abrasion
One rough section can end the next fight.
4. Using one lure all day
Switch method when fish behavior changes.
5. Casting only straight out
Work along reef edges and across current.
6. Setting drag without testing it
A drag number means little if the whole system is not balanced.
7. Giving slack after the strike
Slack can lead to lost contact or allow the fish to gain structure.
8. Fighting from a bad angle
Move when safe. Better line angle can be more important than more drag.
9. Ignoring sea conditions
No fish is worth unsafe footing, wave exposure or dangerous swell.
10. Treating every region the same
