Gear needed

  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • An electric float or glow sticks
  • A reflective life jacket
  • Warm, windproof clothing
  • A map of a familiar spot

Steps

  1. Scout the spot and exits in daylight
  2. Arrive before dusk and set up lights
  3. Fish the dusk and tide-change windows
  4. Move slowly and watch your footing
  5. Check in with a partner or family regularly

Common mistakes

  • Going to an unfamiliar spot for the first time at night
  • Carrying only one light with no backup
  • Shining the headlamp on the water and spooking fish
  • Fishing alone at night without telling anyone

Safety notes

  • Wear a reflective life jacket throughout
  • Stay off slippery tetrapods and rock edges
  • Watch tides and rogue waves, never turn your back
  • Fish with a partner and share your return time
  • Pack up at once if tired or weather turns
