Assorted baits and lures in a tackle tray

Gear needed

  • Bait such as krill or sandworm
  • Soft plastics and spoons
  • A tray of hooks and sinkers
  • A cool box for bait

Steps

  1. Match bait type to your target fish
  2. Hook bait to cover or expose the point as needed
  3. Retrieve lures slowly, then vary the rhythm
  4. Adjust size and color from the bites you get
  5. Switch bait or spot when nothing bites

Common mistakes

  • Bait too large or loosely hooked
  • Retrieving lures at one constant speed
  • Letting bait spoil in the sun
  • Colors that clash with water clarity

Safety notes

  • Mind the hook point when baiting
  • Wash hands after handling live bait
  • Store treble-hook lures safely
  • Carry out bait scraps, leave no mess
